The Genomic Science Training Program: Shaping the Future of Genomic Science

By Audrey Gasch

For more than two decades, the Genomic Sciences Training Program (GSTP) has stood at the forefront of genome research education, nurturing a new generation of scientists ready to tackle the complexities of genome-enabled science. Funded by the NIH National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), the GSTP has been instrumental in fostering innovation and invention, equipping pre- and post-doctoral trainees with the interdisciplinary expertise necessary to advance genomic science in groundbreaking ways.

The program was founded in 2003 by Dr. David Schwartz, a visionary in genome-enabled thinking and technologies who established one of the most prestigious genomic training programs in the country. His leadership emphasized invention—encouraging scientists to think beyond conventional boundaries and develop new methodologies that could redefine biological investigation.

Now, with Dr. Schwartz’s retirement, along with longtime GSTP coordinator Dr. Louise Pape, the program enters a new era of leadership. At the helm is Dr. Qiongshi Lu, an Associate Professor of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics. Dr. Lu brings expertise in statistical human genomics, with a focus on developing advanced methods to analyze complex traits, genetic interactions, disease predictions, and the role of artificial intelligence in genomics.

Under Dr. Lu’s leadership, the program will maintain its focus on invention and creativity.  Dr. Lu’s expertise naturally brings a perspective for integrating AI and statistical innovations into genomic research. “Dave has been a fantastic steward of GSTP for more than two decades,” says Lu.  “I am excited to work with everyone to advance our program.”

As GSTP embarks on this next phase, its mission remains to push the boundaries of genome science, mentor its future leaders, and drive innovation and invention for new biological perspectives. The program and everyone associated with it wish Drs. Schwartz and Pape a rewarding retirement.
